Activities Entertain Teens At Library

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Where do some Nashville teenagers go after school is dismissed?

Some go home while others look for other things to do.

The city's Southeast branch of the Nashville Public Library has an idea that some students are just eating up.

De'Ante Conyers is concentrating on his cards. He's playing Apples to Apples.

"Apples to Apples is basically, you put down a green card that has a topic on it, then like you put down one of these red cards that best describes the word that's on the green card," he said.

He spends most of his Wednesdays at the library as part of Snack Attack.

"It's obviously the snacks. We always have snacks. Every week we do something different but we always have snacks," said librarian Beth Deeb.

She is in charge of making sure the seventh to twelfth graders who participate are entertained.

"The idea is that if you can make teenagers feel comfortable in the library, you can get them during a period where they may not choose to come to the library, and then they become maybe lifelong library users," she said.

Snack Attack, the kids said, is a great alternative to just sitting around.

"We play games, we watch movies, we eat. Sometimes we make artwork," said one participant.

The activity usually attracts up to 15 students. The food and extras are paid for by the library.

"I think they just enjoy hanging out together. We don't do homework. It's supposed to be a break after school," Deeb said.
