Fans Berate Wrong Chris Conte Following NFL Game

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - NewsChannel 5 Reporter Chris Conte became the victim of mistaken online identity on Sunday night following the Chicago Bears loss to the Green Bay Packers.

They are nothing new: mean tweets or Facebook post slung across the Internet by people who sometimes forget there are people on the receiving end of their harsh words.

But on Sunday night following the Chicago Bears painful loss to the Green Bay Packers, a whole host of Twitter followers decided to sound off on their disgust for safety Chris Conte. Problem was they were attacking the wrong Chris Conte.

Professional football player Chris Conte disabled his Twitter feed weeks ago after apparently deciding the onslaught of mean tweets was too much to take and so the flood of hateful words rushed into the Twitter account of NewsChannel 5's Chris Conte.

"I will kill your babies," one person Tweeted.

"I hope you die of AIDS," another one said.

"Wrap your mouth around a tail pipe until you pass out," a third person suggested.

Allow me a few sentences of editorial comment here.

Most of the things these people posted online for all the world to see are of course protected by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution, but you have to wonder if somewhere along the way we've lost a small piece of common decency toward one another.

I personally didn't take any of these comments very seriously but there are too many young people out there who are victims of this type of cyber bullying who can't just brush it off.

"What's happened is we have this megaphone that can broadcast to the world but we haven't changed our behavior to respect that much power," Lipscomb Psychology Professor Chris Gonzalez explained to us on Monday.

"If they were looking you in the eye or looking this Bears player in the eye they probably wouldn't say these things," he added.

And sadly, he's right.
