Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A 13-year-old boy was critically injured after being struck by a freight train Tuesday night and police said it was an attempted suicide.

Dorian Piper of Lebanon Pike suffered extensive injuries and was listed in critical condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Officials said Piper was walking on the tracks near Elm Pike and Arlington Avenue in South Nashville adjacent to those on which the train was traveling.

Piper was struck just before 8:30 p.m. Tuesday and was found by officers under the train breathing, but unresponsive.

The train engineer said he sounded the horn several times and Piper responded by lifting his hand, looking over his shoulder and crossing into the tracks the train was on.
