Mayor Dean Speaks at Eid Celebration

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn.- The Holy Month of Ramadan came to an end Sunday morning, starting the Eid celebration.

Hundreds from Nashville's Kurdish/Muslim community gathered Sunday morning in South Nashville for prayer and then celebration. During Ramadan, members fast from sun up to sun down, not eating or drinking for almost 17 hours.

Nashville Mayor Karl Dean joined the ceremony. He says it's important the Muslim community stay involved in things happening in Nashville.

"As mayor, I am proud our city recognizes that our strength lies in our cultural and religious diversities. We are proud, we are very proud of the global community, and we know that we can create the opportunities in our city by opening up our doors rather than closing them," said

Nashville is home to one of the largest Kurdish communities in the United States.
