MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - A federal judge said photo identifications issued by the Memphis public library cannot be used as valid voter IDs.
U.S. District Court Judge Aleta A. Trauger on Tuesday declined to issue an injunction that would have allowed the use of the library IDs as valid identification in Thursday's election in Shelby County.
The Nashville-based judge ruled that the statute requiring voters to present identification at the polls says the IDs are valid if they are issued by state entities, but not county or city entities.
Trauger did express frustration with the law. She said it did not make sense that an expired hunting license from another state can be used as a valid ID but a photo ID from the Memphis library is invalid.
