Dead New York Yacht Victims Were All Children
OYSTER BAY, N.Y. (AP/NewsChannel5) - Police have identified the three children who died after yacht capsized on the Fourth of July off New York's Long Island.
David Aurelino 12, Harley Treanor 11, and Victoria Gaines 8 were recovered from the boat's cabin. They all lived in Suffolk County.
Nassau County Deputy Inspector Kenneth Lack said the three were recovered from the water near Oyster Bay after a long overnight search.
Twenty-four other people were rescued, and were treated and released. One person was hospitalized in serious condition, but was also released.
Lack said some but not all passengers onboard the 34-foot boat had been wearing life jackets. He believes they were watching fireworks.
Weather and a wake from another boat were being investigated as possible factors. Detective Lieutenant John Azzata said alcohol was not believed to be a factor.
The boat had two operators. Passengers had been watching a fireworks display when it capsized around 10 p.m. Wednesday.
U.S. Coast Guard officials said the survivors were pulled from the water around 11 p.m., about an hour after the boat went over.
