Supply Reaches Emergency Levels; Blood Donations Needed

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The American Red Cross is asking for all eligible blood donors to give as soon as possible as their blood supply has reached emergency levels.

The Red Cross said they received 50,000 fewer donations than expected in June. The shortfall leaves the Red Cross with half the readily available blood products on hand now than this time last year.

All blood types are needed, but especially O positive, O negative, B negative and A negative in order to meet patient demand this summer.

The organization said the early start to spring could be a contributing factor to the decrease in donations.

Someone in the U.S. needs a blood transfusion every two seconds, according the Red cross.

People can either donate by going to their local Red Cross, or there are several blood drives planned for June and July in Nashville:
