MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen said the city of Memphis is receiving a $14.9 million federal grant to create a bicycle and pedestrian trail across a historic bridge that connects Tennessee and Arkansas over the Mississippi River.

A statement released Tuesday by Cohen, D-Memphis, said the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery grant will help fund a $30 million project that will connect downtown Memphis with West Memphis, Ark.

According to the Downtown Memphis Commission, the project will include utility, sidewalk, roadway and drainage improvements along Main Street in downtown Memphis.

It also includes conversion of the existing roadways on the historic Harahan Bridge to a bicycle and pedestrian bridge, and construction of new multi-use trails to connect the bridge with new Broadway Avenue improvements in West Memphis.
