Man Shot Near Funeral Of Birthday Party Shooting Victim

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A man was shot in the neck outside the church where a funeral was being held for a 17-year-old boy who was gunned down outside a birthday party last week.

Police said the shots were fired from a car at the 19-year-old victim, who was standing alone on the sidewalk of Horton Avenue around 7:20 p.m. Sunday.

Investigators said they're still sorting out the details, like getting a description of the shooter or shooters and the car they were in.

"That's why its important if anyone saw anything or knows anything. Call Crime Stoppers like I've said many times before. Crimes like this where we don't have a lot to go on at the beginning citizens are often the key to solving crimes," said Metro Police Captain Kenneth Walburn.

The shooting victim was taken to Vanderbilt Medical Center, where he was listed in critical but stable condition.

The shooting took place while a funeral was being held at nearby Watson Grove Baptist Church for 17-year-old Antwand Covington, Jr.

Covington was shot and killed last week as he was arriving at a Sweet 16th birthday party.

Police said Covington arrived at the party in a car with other people. Almost immediately after he got out of the car, someone standing on the street a few houses away shot him. Covington's friends put him back into the car and rushed him to Summit Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators said they think Covington rode to the party with the intended victim, and was hit as he stepped out of the car.

Metro Police charged 18-year-old Stephen King and 18-year-old William Martin with murder in the case. Police believe King was the shooter, and Martin drove the getaway car and later lied about it.

Antwand was the oldest brother of six boys and had just graduated from Hillsboro High school.

Police were trying to determine if there was any relation between the shooting and the murder of Covington. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME.
