Memphis Man Held In Connection With Japan Slaying

Posted: Updated:

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - A Memphis man is being held in Japan in connection with the death of an Irish woman last month.

The Commercial Appeal reported that 19-year-old Richard Hinds has been taken into custody with another American in connection with the death of 21-year-old Nicola Furlong, who was found strangled May 24 in a Tokyo hotel.

Police arrested both men shortly afterward, holding them on suspicion of sexually molesting Furlong's female friend in a taxi to the hotel.

Suspects can be held for a considerable period of time without a charge under Japanese law. Police have not officially named Hinds as the second suspect, since he is considered a minor under law there.

Friends said Hinds was in Japan as part of the touring group of a Japanese pop star.
