Youth Falls 100 Feet Down Signal Mountain

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - Rescuers said the nature of the terrain where a teen fell off of Signal Mountain helped save him from more serious injuries.

The 17-year-old boy fell over a bluff on Wednesday while helping with landscaping.

Amy Maxwell of Hamilton County Emergency Services said the youth fell about 50 feet and rolled about 250 feet more. The boy was not wearing a safety belt.

Rescuers said the heavy brush cushioned his fall. The section where he fell goes from a gradual slope to a vertical drop and back to a gradual slope.

The youth, whose name wasn't immediately known, had a head injury and possibly a broken arm.

Rescuers began pulling him up the mountain around 11 a.m. He was talking with rescuers and his vital signs were good.
