Officials Blame Algae for Foul-Smelling Water

Posted: Updated:

FRANKLIN, Tenn.- The recent heat has residents of Franklin facing a familiar water problem.

In the past few weeks there has been an increase in blue-green algae blooms in the water. Officials say that's what is creating the foul odor in the water.  City leaders are investigating the problem, but they are assuring people the water is safe to drink. They are also looking to improve the city's water plan.

Last year Franklin endured the same problem. Last July, a  half dozen Franklin city leaders gathered around a table and several computers to answer questions about foul-tasting water. They created a  Facebook forum after dozens of people inquired about the water. City administrators declared the water was safe to drink then as well.

At a public meeting next week, they'll talk about all these issues. The meeting will be Monday, at 6:00 p.m. at the Eastern Flank Battlefield Park Club House.

Franklin gets its water supply from the Harpeth River.
