Colin Powell Speaks In Nashville

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn.- Former Secretary of State and Joint Chiefs of Staff Colin Powell discussed his new book in front of a packed house at Belmont University.

The book, ‘It Worked for Me: In Life and Leadership' focuses on the lessons and experiences he says shaped his career.

He spoke candidly with Pulitzer Prize winning journalist John Meachum about his interactions with fellow soldiers and presidents. He said trust is the key to being a good leader.

"I've always tried to build that kind of bond between leaders and followers," said Powell, "You will be surprised what they will do for you. Trust is the basis of all human relations."

The discussion did turn political and without criticizing any particular candidates, Powell said both political parties need to do a better job working together.

"The country lives by compromise and consensus," said Powell, "Our founding fathers had to compromise in Philadelphia and they had to have a consensus to move us forward. That is what we have to get back to."

The responsive crowd inside Belmont's Massey Concert Hall laughed and applauded throughout the conversation. They were also allowed to ask questions and get copies of the book autographed.

Powell was the commander of the 2nd Brigade at Fort Campbell in 1976 and stopped by to talk with soldiers there earlier in the day. He said many of his experiences there are featured in the book.
