WOODBURY, Tenn.—A Cannon County toddler has become an Internet sensation and inspiration to millions worldwide.
Fifteen month old Christian Buchanan was born with a Tessier Cleft, a rare birth defect, that left him with no eyes. His mother, Lacey, decided to post a video of his struggles on the Internet. 10 million hits later, she said she has been shocked by the response.
"People are saying ‘he has changed the way I will live my life,'" said Lacey Buchanan, "It is amazing the things people are telling me."
The video features Lacey holding Christian, and displaying note cards telling his story. She reveals his face at the end of the 7 minute video.
"I can still cry watching the video," Lacey said, "When you see that smile, you melt."
Christian has already endured three major surgeries, and extended time in the hospital, however, he loves to play with his toys like any other toddler.
"Just because he looks different, doesn't discount him or disqualify him in anyway."
Lacey hopes the video helps spotlight the struggles of a special needs child, and inspires the parents who raise them.
"To me the fact that he doesn't give up, makes me never want to give up."
Christian participates in speech, physical, feeding and musical therapy each week. He could have as many as a dozen surgeries throughout his life, including a palette reconstruction.
"He's tough." said Lacey, "It's been amazing to watch."
