HOHENWALD,Tenn.—The Hohenwald mayor's son is facing possible charges for allegedly driving drunk and crashing into a cemetery.
A THP report shows Saturday around 11 p.m., 20-year-old Parker Clayton lost control of his vehicle on Highway 48, and crashed into the Downey Cemetery. Ten tombstones were shattered. Alcohol was a factor in the crash.
Hohenwald residents with family members buried at the cemetery continue to stop by the assess the damage. The area is blocked off, but tombstones are still in pieces, and flowers are strewn about.
"It's really upsetting," said Jerry James, whose two brothers' grave markers were damaged in the accident, "I can't really describe my emotions right now."
Mayor Johnny Clayton said his son made a "mistake," that could have been deadly. He said insurance should cover the costs of replacing all the grave markers, and he is working with the cemetery to ensure that happens quickly.
Parker Clayton was transported to Mary Regional Hospital, but was not hurt. THP continues to investigate the crash.
