Vol State Accidentally Leaves Student Information On Server

Posted: Updated:

GALLATIN, Tenn. – Administrators at Volunteer State Community College are notifying thousands of students and faculty that some of their information could have been compromised.

The school said that names and social security numbers of some 14,000 people, mostly former students, were placed on a web server used for academic purposes that has since been removed. There was no credit card or financial information on the files, and it was not the main web server.

School officials said it's unlikely anyone looked at the files without permission since 2008. They added that they have no evidence that it was discovered or used maliciously.

They are recommending students to place a free "fraud alert" on their credit file, and are offering a free year of credit protection service from the college upon request.

They have set up a phone number (615-230-3390) and website to handle any questions.
