Changes Coming After Deadly December Pile-Up

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn.- Two months after a deadly pile-up on Vietnam Veterans Boulevard, officials with the Tennessee Department of Transportation authorized some major improvements to the roadway to make sure it never happens again.

TDOT performed a safety audit after an early morning crash on Vietnam Veterans Boulevard near Shutes Lane triggering a string of pile-up crashes that stretched for nearly two miles and killed two people.

Officials agreed that emergency responders did an excellent job at the scene, but they wanted improvements to make the road safer.

On Tuesday, the agency agreed on four projects to increase the safety of the road in that area:

  • Extending the guardrail at the Saunders Ferry Bridge in the Eastbound lanes
  • Installing more and larger signs that say "Bridge Ices Before Roadway"
  • Installing markers called "chevrons" on bridges, as well as markers so drivers know where the bridge begins
  • And finally, installation of flexible deliniators on several bridges and guardrails in that area. Flexible delineators are small, orange and white markers.

State Senator Mae Beavers requested the safety audit that resulted in these new measures, on behalf of county officials
