MURFREESBORO, Tenn.-  Murfreesboro Police arrested six people, including five juveniles in connection with a shooting at a Murfreesboro school on Monday.

The shooting at Cason Lane Academy sent 14-year-old to the hospital with two gunshot wounds to the leg.

Luckily for the teen, an off duty paramedic heard what happened and ran to help. Brad Cantrell is an Alabama paramedic and firefighter and was in Tennessee on vacation and visiting family.  When he heard the gunshots he ran to the school to help.

"I was like, wow.  A kid just got shot and of course instincts kick straight in," said Cantrell

Cantrell did what he's trained to do. He just happened to be at the right place at the right time.

"I noticed a vehicle pass by with several kids in it and it kind of drew my attention, so I started walking that way anyway and I heard the two gunshots," he said.

Just after 5 o'clock Monday afternoon there was an altercation between two groups of kids that ended in a shooting. A 14 year old boy was shot twice in the leg. Several kids ran between houses to get away.

Cantrell ran to help the wounded teenager.

"I was surprised at how young every one of the kids were.  There were no adults around.  There was no one over 16 or 17," said    Cantrell

Murfreesboro Police arrested 5 juveniles and one adult in the shooting case. 19-year-old Travis Stanley was charged with conspiracy.

Police said there were two shooters, who are both juveniles and they have been charged with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon on school property.

Cantrell said he was glad the shooting didn't happen 30 minutes earlier when smaller children were playing t-ball on the same field.

The 14-year-old hurt in the shooting was taken to Middle Tennessee Medical Center in Murfreesboro and then transferred to Vanderbilt Medical Center. He was expected to be okay.
