No Major Damage Found At KY Bridge Collapse

Posted: Updated:

FRANKFORT, KY. (AP) -- Gov. Steve Beshear says an underwater inspection team concluded the crash of a cargo ship into the Eggners Ferry Bridge on Kentucky Lake caused no significant damage to the piers.

Beshear said Friday the state now has a better idea of how to proceed further.

A cargo ship struck part of the bridge on the Tennessee River near Aurora Jan. 26, causing a 332-foot long section to collapse. No one was hurt, but traffic has been detoured to Interstate 24.

Beshear said the inspection by a four-person team is a positive step to make temporary repairs to restore traffic across Kentucky Lake. The governor himself inspected damage Wednesday.

He said engineers have been planning for repairs under multiple scenarios.

No estimate was given Friday on a timetable for repairs.
