NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - This week marks the 150th anniversary of Civil War battles at Fort Donelson and Fort Henry, both northwest of Nashville.
Union forces prevailed at both sites. WPLN radio in Nashville quotes historian Jimmy Jobe as saying Confederate orders showed there was little hope of victory.
Confederate officers argued over strategy while Union Gen. Ulysses.S. Grant made a series of quick decisions. Grant earned the nickname "Unconditional Surrender Grant" after his victory at Fort Donelson on the Cumberland River just south of where the Land Between the Lakes is now.
The Confederates had hoped the two sites would form a strong barrier for them.
