NASHVILLE, Tenn.- Emergency Crews responded to the scene of a wreck in the Gulch area of Nashville where a car went off the road, over a rock bluff, and into a construction site.
It happened around 7 p.m. at Overton and Gleaves Streets. A Ford Explorer became wedged between a rock bluff and the cement wall of a new apartment building.
The unidentified driver called 911 from his stranded vehicle.
Firefighters had to lower themselves into the vehicle to reach the driver.
"The crews got down there to him, got him stabilized, took the back window out of the Explorer, and was able to remove him in about 15 to 20 minutes.
The SUV was wedged between a cement wall that was poured two days ago. A member of the construction crew who built that wall felt it most likely saved the driver's life.
"It kept him from flipping over this way and kept him from landing on top of his little Ford Explorer right there. He would have been in the floor board," said Nathan Wilson.
After the driver was pulled from the SUV he was able to walk around. It was not believed he was seriously injured during the wreck.
Chief Ricky Taylor mentioned if the driver had not been able to call for help, he may have been stranded for hours, possibly until daylight, before someone would have noticed the wreck.
Metro Nashville Police are still investigation what led up to the driver going over the bluff and into the construction site.
