Faith Leaders Speak Out Against English Only Amendment

Posted:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A group Nashville religious leaders have issued a joint statement opposing a proposed city charter amendment that would prevent written materials from being translated into languages other than English.

The initiative would also prevent use of interpreters for people who don't speak English well.

Early voting started Jan. 2 and will continue until Jan. 17, with the special election on Jan. 22.

Rabbis, priests, pastors and imams ate breakfast together Thursday at Loews Vanderbilt Plaza before holding a news conference to read a statement under the collective name "Faith Leaders of Nashville."

Antioch United Methodist Church senior pastor Jay Voorhees said the group of 240 Jewish, Christian and Islamic leaders believes the "proposal erects a wall where windows to better understanding are needed."
