Drop-Kicked Dog Civil Suit Settled

NASHVILLE- Two men accused of drop-kicking a dog settled a civil suit with the dog's owners Wednesday.

Chad Crawford, 26, and 23-year-old Michael Davis were accused of killing Gizmo, a Yorkshire terrier, in April 2004.

Police said Davis held the dog in place, while Crawford took a running start and kicked the 16-year-old dog like a football. The incident happened in the Nashboro Village Apartments in Antioch and attracted international attention.

Gizmo's owners Jelani Lewis and his wife, Jessica Lewis, filed a $200,000 lawsuit against the men, who settled the suit for an undisclosed amount.

"It's like losing a child," Jelani Lewis told NewsChannel 5 shortly after the dog's death in 2004. "We don't have any kids and a small dog like that depends on you for everything."

Crawford and Davis also face animal cruelty charges for Gizmo's death.

Their trial is scheduled to begin in February.
