Rescue Mission Builds Addition To Keep Up With Demand

Posted:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - They are young and innocent and they are becoming one of the growing faces of the homeless. More and more children are calling shelters home, as their mothers and fathers face tough times.

The facility was working to expand their facility to hold their increase in clients. There was no one reason for the increase, but there was a definite reason the mission is here - to help mothers and children in need.

Mauzie Williams and her family are facing some tough times.

"I lost my job and my husband works at Wendy's and he only makes like, $6.80 an hour and just on his income we weren't making enough," said Williams.

The family turned to Nashville Rescue Mission because of the rules, she and her son DaMarcus stay at the women's shelter and her husband at the men's mission downtown.

"My first night I was like, 'oh my GOD,' there was like 150 women here. I did not know that there were so many women who did not have a place to stay or who where bad on their luck," said Williams.

At the Nashville Rescue Mission for Women, there was a more than a 30 percent increase from last year.

"In a facility built for 80 people, as of two weeks ago, we have 179 people in that facility," said Cliff Tredway, Nashville Rescue Misson.

Tredway said they are not at the point where they have to turn away new clients.

"Unfortunately when we hit that area when we can't allow," said Tredway.

To prevent that from happening, the Mission is building a $5.4 million addition.

The Mission also has an agreement with the Metro School system. They enroll the children at the district schools. They are first to be picked up by the buses and the last to be dropped off.
