Meerkat Raises Money For Non-Profit

Posted:

NASHVILLE, Tenn.- To make it through these tough times, a lot of us have had to cut back. That fact has really hit the bottom line of many non-profit organizations. But if you go to Twitter, you can help without having to shell out a single dollar.

The folks at the Community Foundation decided one way to funnel money to non-profits.

With nearly four hundred followers a Meerkat knew he could use Twitter to get out his message.

"He posted a tweet that said, hey re-tweet this message for the Community Foundation and help the zoo win $100," said Jim Bartoo with the Nashville zoo.

The Nashville Zoo's just one of 850 organizations that could cash in, thanks to the Community Foundation.

One thousand dollars over ten weeks is up for grabs. It's a high-tech, easy way, to still give during these times.

"I think maybe it hit a nerve with folks who might have less to give this year then they have ordinarily, but it's a way for them to make good things happen for a favorite charity," said Ellen Lehman with The Community Foundation.

Over 90 non-profits got in on the first round of the give away and on week one  Gumu got enough tweets in the mix to take home top honors.  Gumu will continue to tweet and try again for the Community Foundation's one K giveaway.
